WH 9: Working on the Project

READ ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST!

I am on jury duty today, so you will be working on your project. Your focus today should be on what you want to communicate to your peers about your topic. Remember, it has to include geography and Islam, otherwise it is a pretty open field.

Get your ideas on paper by responding to these prompts. I expect you to work on these in class today, and have your written responses in class on Monday.

1.What quality sources have you found? List them, and make a note of how they will be useful to you. USE WHAT WE LEARNED LAST CLASS! (bit.ly/sunsetlibrary) I expect each student to use at least three sources.

What information do you need for a source citation? If you are not sure, be sure to have your sources bookmarked for next class. We will have a short work session on citing sources on Monday.

2.In list or story form, what background knowledge will your audience need in order to understand the story/information that you are going to share?

3.In a conversational tone, tell the story that is going to be your presentation in writing. If you find this impossible, you still  need to work on the content of your presentation. There is no substitute for being an expert.

4. How can you BEST communicate what you have learned? Try a new medium or technological platform. This is an area where I encourage you to take some risks. Try a new way. Think about how your audience will experience your story. What will help them follow the story and understand the important parts? Is there a way that you can SHOW us and TELL us? I have included links below for programs you can try. Most of these are programs I am not familiar with. Try something new, your grade will not be lowered for trying a new platform that does not work out how you imagined it would.

Your content must be solid and detailed, but on delivery method I encourage you to “go for it” with a new medium.  You will be graded on the knowledge target:

“Demonstrates detailed knowledge.”

and the communication target, but for the communication target I will be looking for :

“Communicates in a manner appropriate to the content and audience.”

For this project this means that as long as you had a well thought out reason for choosing a presentation medium, I will not penalize you if it doesn’t end up working out the way you envisioned. Look Below for ideas:

On Monday I expect that you will have answers to the prompts above, and you will have a rough draft of your presentation that you can share for peer editing. I will also expect that you can describe at least ONE presentation method that you evaluated, but chose not to use. Be able to say why it was not the best way for you to do you r presentation.

Peer editing for this project is essential.

You should not expect to get a good grade without Monday’s peer editing.

If you do not have a complete draft of your presentation, it will be hard for your peer editor to give you feedback beyond “You should finish your presentation.”
